Strands - Media & Public Awareness

Challenging stereotypes: the Karabakh conflict in the media and public domain

Led by Conciliation Resources, this strand of work uses media to promote dialogue and understanding across the Nagorny Karabakh conflict divide.

Highlights

Radio Diaries: journalists from across the South Caucasus collected everyday stories of ordinary people’s lives. These have been broadcast on more than 20 radio stations throughout the region, giving listeners a rare chance to hear directly from people on ‘the other side’.

Accord: An edition of Conciliation Resources’ acclaimed Accord series reviewing peace processes around the world, focused on the conflict. The Limits of Leadership: elites and societies in the Nagorny Karabakh peace process, included contributions from the Armenian and Azeri foreign ministers, as well as a range of local and international academics, civil society activists and journalists.

Work in Action

Dialogue Through Film is a groundbreaking project bringing together young film-makers from Azerbaijan and Nagorny Karabakh. Produced with the help of Internews Armenia, Internews Azerbaijan and the Stepanakert Press Club, the resulting films have been moving, funny and thought-provoking. ‘We wanted to make good films but we also wanted to help ourselves and others to think differently,’ said one participant. ‘When we started we were five Azeris and five Karabakhis,’ said another. ‘Now at the end we are 10 journalists’.

Impact

Information and in-depth analysis about the conflict and peace process has been made widely available across the region, by radio, in film, in print and online.

Local journalists have had the opportunity to work together across the conflict divide, improving not only their professional skills but also their overall understanding of the conflict and of each other.

The Radio Diaries project has helped to break down stereotypes at grass-roots level. One government minister told us the accompanying anthology should be required reading in all schools in his country.

Other activities include the training of journalists, supporting radio and television programme makers and the publication and dissemination of materials to promote critical and creative perspectives on the obstacles and opportunities in the peace process.
