Statement by LINKS on the 2nd Plenary Assembly of the South Caucasus Parliamentary Initiative and the Round Table Meeting “The South Caucasus in a changing Europe” held in Sofia on 3rd July.

The British non governmental organisation LINKS organised a Round Table meeting with the theme “The South Caucasus in a changing Europe” with the participation of experts from the South Caucasus and other European countries. The meetings was organised on the side of the 2nd Plenary Assembly meeting of the South Caucasus Parliamentary Initiative held in Sofia 1-3 July.

LINKS regrets that not for the first time, a section of the media in both Armenia and Azerbaijan have wrongly reflected events connected with this activity. Specifically LINKS wishes to confirm that the final communiqué of the Plenary Assembly of the South Caucasus Parliamentary Initiative was approved unanimously at the final plenary session of the South Caucasus Parliamentary Initiative. As for the Round Table Meeting all participants in the round table participated in a personal capacity and no one present was representing the Governments of either Armenia or Azerbaijan or the de facto authorities of Nagorny Karabakh. The holding of informal round tables on the side of meetings of international institutions is an established practise which helps the development of ideas on different issues. On this occasion also experts reflected ideas that were not necessarily shared by the official delegations attending the SCPI Plenary Assembly meeting.

The Sofia meetings were conducted in a serious and cordial manner and LINKS is very satisfied with the results of both meetings which will contribute to the development of dialogue in the South Caucasus and to the further integration of the region in Europe.
